B7x and myeloid-derived suppressor cells in the tumor microenvironment

A new study demonstrates the tumorigenic functions of B7x and reveals a link between B7x and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) within the tumor microenvironment. We propose that the binding of B7x to a hitherto unidentified receptor on MDSCs may stimulate their proliferation and/or immunosuppressive functions, hence promoting tumor growth.

Regulatory T Cells and Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells in Patients with Peptic Ulcer and Gastric Cancer

Background: Regulatory T Cells (Tregs) and Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells (MDSCs) are two main regulatory cells modulating the immune responses in inflammation and cancer. Objective: To investigate and compare Tregs and MDSCs in peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Methods: Patients with dyspepsia were selected and divided into three groups of non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD, n=22), peptic ulcer disease...

Tumor-derived lactate and myeloid-derived suppressor cells

Many malignant cells produce increased amounts of lactate, which promotes the development of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). MDSCs, lactate, and a low pH in the tumor microenvironment inhibit the function of natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes, hence allowing for disease progression. Ketogenic diets can deplete tumor-bearing animals from MDSCs and regulatory T cells, thereby i...

Microenvironment and Immunology Gangliosides Drive the Tumor Infiltration and Function of Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells

Although it is now widely appreciated that antitumor immunity is critical to impede tumor growth and progression, there remain significant gaps in knowledge about themechanisms usedby tumors to escape immune control. In tumor cells, we hypothesized that one mechanism of immune escape used by tumors involves the synthesis and extracellular shedding of gangliosides, a class of biologically active...

Microenvironment and Immunology Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells as a Vehicle for Tumor-Specific Oncolytic Viral Therapy

One of the several impediments to effective oncolytic virus therapy of cancer remains a lack of tumorspecific targeting. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are immature myeloid cells induced by tumor factors in tumor-bearing hosts. The biodistribution kinetics of MDSC and other immune cell types in a murine hepatic colon cancer model was investigated through the use of tracking markers and...
